Please take a few minutes to answer these few questions before July 9th. If you prefer to do it online the link is http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QZBF5JS. Otherwise you can drop your survey at the Town Clerks Office, or EME School or mail to:

The E. Montpelier Elementary School Board and Facilities Committee are beginning to shape a proposal to bring to the voters in November. We are particularly interested in your comments or suggestions as we move forward. The more specific you can make them, the more useful they will be.
School bond votes are vital to all school systems and require total community involvement. Children need sound school buildings just as they need a strong instructional program.
Respectfully,
Facilities Committee East Montpelier Elementary School

After input from Community, Staff and Facilities Committee here is the latest Option for the needs of the School.
Please give us your input and comments.
Here are the Options Presented at our last Community Meeting January 25th,2012
After community and staff feedback, the Facilities Committee is recommending that we move forward with Option B overall with the Elementary PK and K1 Wing of Option A and some other small changes. For the site plan it will be a combination of both site plans, most of Option A+B site with extra parking near the entrance. This is still a work in progress so please give us your input and post your questions and comments.
Thank you for putting out the Elementary School draft plans for comments. This plan certainly offers improvements over the current conditions and space.
ReplyDeleteHaving the library and technology center right at the front entrance highlights its importance to the school and community and will encourage community use.
Adding a gymnasium and dedicating the current space to use as a cafeteria, auditorium and multipurpose room is an important feature. I am concerned that the proposed gymnasium space is so small that it does not allow for seating in the space itself. Putting in an overhead door and seating people in the hallway repeats one of the problems of the current space; no room for spectators. It may even be worse as it appears from the drawing that people in the hall would not be able to see the ends of the court and they would be blocking the access to and from the music room, which is a safety hazard.
I am hoping that you will not be penny wise and pound foolish. When we know how difficult this situation is in the current space, I can not understand why an almost identical problem is being proposed for the new space. In the context of the total project, constructing the side wall of the gymnasium 10 feet further out would add very little to the total cost and would be an important investment for future involvement of parents and the community in the activities of the communities' youth.
Thank you for addressing the handicapped accessibility issues. It appears that at least the water closets by the cafeteria and by the proposed gymnasium are accessible. Are the entryways being made accessible? This is a concern for students but also for the elderly and we have a rapidly aging population who want to have convenient access to community resources such as the school.
Has the storage issue been carefully considered? It looks like at least one current storage space is being repurposed for a water closet and I do not see a lot of additional storage space included. Not enough storage space leads to crowded and unsafe storage practices and makes keeping a clean and tidy school very difficult.
Being thoughtful and even frugal with taxpayer dollars is essential. However, this is a long term investment in the education of the children and youth of East Montpelier and the future of our community. If history is any guide, it will be about 25 years before there is a chance to address issues again and I urge you to temper frugality with the need to address the long known issues with the building.
Again, thank you for the opportunity to comment on the plans and for the extensive community involvement process in which you have engaged. I recognize the need for compromises to address concerns, including cost concerns. In the end, the decision the Board has to make is when the compromises will negatively impact the education of students for the next quarter century, and thus the future of our community.
